Bobby Bonds wins TSHOTGOLF Longdrive

February 28, 2000
Wells Fargo Celebrity Golf Classic

Ancala Country Club, Scottsdale, AZ

When Bobby Bonds was a 22 year old outfielder in his first major league game, playing for the Giants against the Dodgers June 25, 1968 in Candlestick Park, he became the first player in the 20th century to collect a grand slam in his debut.

Highlights in Bobby's career include the 1973 All-Star Game. Recall that Bobby collected MVP Honors replacing starter Billy Williams in the fourth inning then smacked a two-run homer in the fifth inning as the National League earned the victory. Bobby Bonds was the 4th 30-homer, 30-steal player in ML history as well. Other stats:

OF-DH/1968-81 .268 batting average 332 homers 1,024 RB 461 stolen bases

  Five-time    30-30 man

Gold Glove in 1971, '73-'74 All-Star in 1971, '73, '75

So, it was no surprise that Bobby Bonds, playing in the tournament for the COX Communications Team, won the TSHOTSGOLF Long Drive Contest on the treacherous No.1 handicap 2nd hole at Ancala Country Club.

Bobby selected a TSHOTS M56 Pro 9° Driver with Tour+ XX shaft and smashed a 320 yard drive into a quartering headwind. The club is now in his bag. (Bobby has since added an M421 12° and M421 25° both with Tour+ shafts.)

Thanks Bobby. For playing, being a great athlete and most of all for contributing your time to a great cause.

Derrick Bussey selected Bobby for the COX Communications team at the pairings party held the previous night. Clever fellow, he knew Bobby was a great draft pick. Derrick, also retired from Pro Ball and a fine athlete in his own right, left nothing in the bag trying to best Bobby and made a good effort but alas, the wind played havoc with his high ball. Next year…

In addition to Bobby Bonds and Derrick Bussey, the COX Communications Team included Paul Drake, Charlie Hall, and Lucas Walker.

Other notables:  Jake Plummer, a great supporter of Alzheimer’s Association, led the first group out. He smoked a draw into the slice headwind but the early round winds were especially high and he was later bested by Bobby’s effort. Joe Garagiola as always made a good showing in support of the event, along with 3 TV’s Dan Davis, Indy Driver Billy Boat, the Tiger’s Home Run King himself Harman Killebrau, the indomitable Danny White, Big Trey Junken, and Racing Great Tom Sneva (his group would not let him drive…imagine.)

The fourth annual Wells Fargo Celebrity Golf Classic benefits  both the Alzheimer's Association and the Maricopa County Sports Commission.
